Ghana Launches Ambitious Renewable Energy Program for Rural Communities
Ghana has officially launched its Scaling-up Renewable Energy Program (SREP) in partnership with the Climate Investment Fund, Swiss Embassy, and African Development Bank. The initiative targets the Bono East, Oti, and Savannah regions, aiming to bridge the rural-urban energy divide through innovative mini-grid solutions.
Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor outlined ambitious goals for the program, projecting over 200 operational mini-grids by 2030. The initiative supports Ghana’s last-mile electrification target of 99.8%, focusing on empowering communities through active participation in construction and management of the energy infrastructure.
The comprehensive program will deploy 12,000 net-metered rooftop solar photovoltaic systems alongside the mini-grid installations. This dual approach aligns with Ghana’s broader transition toward a greener energy future while ensuring sustainable, community-driven development.
Local community engagement is central to the program’s success strategy. The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition emphasizes the importance of grassroots participation to ensure long-term viability and effective management of the renewable energy infrastructure.
