Botswana Launches Landmark 500MW Solar Plant in Oman Partnership — A Nation-Defining Energy Pivot

Botswana has officially launched construction of a 500-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant in Maun, marking one of the most significant steps in the country’s shift away from coal and toward energy self-sufficiency.

President Duma Boko officiated the groundbreaking of the project, a government-to-government initiative between Botswana and the Sultanate of Oman. The plant forms part of a broader national infrastructure drive to secure a clean, affordable and reliable electricity supply for sustainable development.

The North West District Commissioner, Thabang Waloka, described the project as arriving at precisely the right moment to bridge the country’s energy gap.

“This is a large-scale initiative aimed at shifting from coal to renewable energy. The project will significantly lower the need for our country to import electricity, improving national energy security and independence.” — Thabang Waloka, North West District Commissioner, Botswana

Maun is in the process of transitioning into a designated green city, and local leaders expressed the ambition for the region to eventually achieve total reliance on solar energy. The project is expected to create employment opportunities for local residents, promote inclusive economic growth, and build a pipeline of skilled workers in Botswana’s growing renewable energy sector.

The initiative forms part of the government’s wider strategy to accelerate renewable energy deployment, expand electrification across the country, and reduce its carbon footprint — aligning with Botswana’s national development goals under its Sixth National Development Plan.
