Eni has become the first energy company to cross the exascale computing threshold with the June 2026 launch of HPC7, giving it what it describes as the world’s most powerful privately owned supercomputing platform, ranked sixth globally on the TOP500 list behind only state-funded systems in the US, China and Germany.
The company credits its in-house computing power with helping underpin major African discoveries, including the Baleine field in Ivory Coast and the Agogo development in Angola. An Eni spokesperson said HPC7 “immediately supports exploration across all upstream assets,” giving geoscientists more accurate subsurface imaging tools, particularly valuable in “complex geological settings where improved seismic imaging can unlock new exploration opportunities.”
Baleine, discovered in 2021, holds an estimated 2.5 billion barrels of oil and 3.3 trillion cubic feet of associated gas, Ivory Coast’s largest hydrocarbon find in decades; Phase 2 reached 60,000 bpd by late 2024, and Eni and partners Petroci and Vitol sanctioned a $4 billion Phase 3 expansion targeting 150,000 bpd in May 2026. In Angola, the Agogo Integrated West Hub reached first oil just 29 months after FID, about 12 months faster than the deepwater industry average, and is ramping toward 175,000 bpd from roughly 450 million barrels of reserves.
Eni said its computing ecosystem remains fully in-house for now, though the resulting technical products are shared with partners and host governments through joint venture frameworks, and the company announced in late July it would begin opening the infrastructure to external companies and research centres. With Africa’s data centre market projected to grow nearly 16% annually through 2031, Eni’s approach suggests high-performance computing could become as important to resource holders as it is to hyperscale cloud providers.
