South Africa Leads Continental Green Hydrogen Revolution with Massive R1.49 Billion Investment
South Africa is spearheading Africa’s green hydrogen transformation with a staggering R1.49 billion investment in its Hydrogen South Africa program, as President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the continent is advancing 52 large-scale projects representing billions in total investment potential.
Speaking at the inaugural Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, President Ramaphosa revealed that Africa could produce between 30 and 60 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2050, potentially creating up to four million jobs across Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance member states: Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, Namibia, and South Africa.
South Africa is currently fast-tracking five flagship green hydrogen projects, including the ambitious HySHiFT initiative designed to produce 400,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually. The country is simultaneously implementing critical reforms including wheeling regulations and creating an Independent Transmission Projects Office to facilitate electricity transmission growth essential for hydrogen-linked renewable energy expansion.
International partnerships are accelerating development, with Germany’s H2Global mechanism allocating one of four green hydrogen bidding lots specifically to Africa, ensuring off-take agreements for successful projects.
