Japanese trading house ITOCHU Corporation has joined Morocco’s first integrated Energy-from-Waste project in Mediouna, Casablanca, partnering with Kanadevia Inova and Nareva on a facility designed to process 1.5 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually and cover the energy needs of roughly 1 million people.
ITOCHU signed a concession agreement with Casablanca Municipality and power purchase agreements with Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water and public services company SRM Casablanca-Settat, securing a 33.5-year concession that includes construction, with its investment channelled through project company Al Beida Clean Power via its UK subsidiary I-Environment Investments.
The waste heat recovered from incineration will generate 115 megawatts of power, with the project also including operation of existing and new landfill sites, a 4-megawatt biogas plant using landfill methane, and a 50-megawatt solar plant built on surplus land freed up by the waste diversion. ITOCHU said the project is expected to avoid up to 128 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over its 33.5-year life while significantly improving Morocco’s waste management and energy self-sufficiency.
