Cameroon’s Ministry of Finance is projecting a rebound in hydrocarbon activity from around 2028, following a steep decline expected in 2027, with the recovery led by the Chevron-operated Yo Yo field, an offshore gas-condensate discovery in the Douala Basin shared with Equatorial Guinea as the cross-border Yo Yo-Yolanda field.
Gas from the field is planned to feed Equatorial Guinea’s Gas Mega Hub to support LNG and downstream industries, though first gas now looks more likely around 2029 than the originally announced 2028. Cameroon also expects operators to begin work on five recently awarded production-sharing blocks, including the Bolongo block awarded to Octavia Energy, and the Etinde, Tilapia, Elombo and Ntem blocks awarded to Murphy Oil.
The rebound comes as Cameroon’s only LNG export vessel, the Hilli Episeyo, prepares to depart, ending a partnership between Golar LNG, the state-owned National Hydrocarbons Corporation and Perenco, the country’s largest oil producer. Perenco is redirecting gas from its declining Sanaga South and Ebomé fields entirely to the Bipaga Gas Processing Centre, which supplies LPG for domestic cooking gas and industrial gas to a ceramics plant under a 20-year supply contract. The finance ministry projects the sector will grow 14.9% in 2028 and 18.1% in 2029, though the rebound remains contingent on Cameroon converting newly awarded exploration acreage into producing assets.
