Egypt and Japan Sign Historic Green Hydrogen Partnership for Suez Canal Zone
Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCzone) has signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding with Japan’s Tokyo Metropolitan Government for cooperation on green hydrogen development, marking a significant milestone in bilateral energy relations. The agreement was signed by SCzone Chairman Waleid Gamal Eldien and TANAKA Shin-ichi, Director General of the Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs of Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in the presence of Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.
The MOU aims to boost cooperation between both nations on green hydrogen from environmental and economic perspectives through knowledge exchange, expertise sharing, and market demand stimulation. This partnership aligns with Egypt’s ambitious goal to become a regional and global green hydrogen producer and exporter.
In a related development, SCzone also signed a cooperation agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation and Egypt’s Orascom Construction to jointly design, develop, and operate integrated facilities for supplying ships with ammonia as a marine fuel at SCzone’s ports in Sokhna and East Port Said. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce maritime emissions and support the zone’s transition toward sustainable energy in maritime transport.
Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized that cooperation with Japan as a development partner is of great importance to Egypt, given the country’s top priority on new and renewable energy sectors. The agreements build on SCzone’s strategic location on both banks of the Suez Canal, linking the Red Sea and Mediterranean as a central hub for global trade routes.
