Historic cooperation agreement could fast-track Namibia’s petroleum sector development
Angola has made a groundbreaking offer to Namibia, extending its decades of oil and gas expertise to help its southern neighbor develop its emerging petroleum industry. The announcement comes following Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s first official foreign visit to Angola since taking office on March 21.
Presidential spokesperson Alfredo Hengari emphasized the significance of the collaboration: “Angola has built capacity in the oil and gas sector, providing training to Namibians in Angola, and has demonstrably shown readiness to assist Namibia’s nascent oil and gas sector.”
The two heads of state agreed to prioritize cooperation in agriculture, energy, tourism, oil and gas, logistics and infrastructure, including water cooperation—sectors deemed crucial for addressing youth unemployment in both nations. A joint commission of cooperation, co-chaired by both presidents, will oversee these ambitious initiatives.
Additionally, the leaders expressed urgency in developing the Baynes Hydropower Plant as a catalyst for economic growth, with plans to extend power transmission and water canals to serve northern Namibia and neighboring countries.
