As global interest in Africa’s solar, wind and hydro potential grows, analysts are raising concerns about “green colonialism” — a pattern in which external powers could end up dictating the terms of Africa’s energy transition rather than partnering with it on equal footing.
Africa’s renewable energy sector is poised for major growth as electricity demand rises and the cost of renewable technology keeps falling, but developing that potential requires heavy investment that often comes with strings attached from foreign governments, corporations and financial institutions.
To avoid ceding control of their own resources, analysts argue African governments need to be proactive in shaping partnerships that protect their sovereignty and ensure local communities share in the benefits, building green technology partnerships grounded in mutual respect rather than one-sided access to Africa’s renewable assets.
