Libya’s Mabruk Oilfield Roars Back to Life After a Decade of Silence

Oil is flowing once again from Libya’s Mabruk field after nearly a decade of enforced silence. The joint venture Mabruk Oil Operations — comprising Libya’s National Oil Company, TotalEnergies, and Equinor — officially restarted production at the onshore concession C17, located approximately 130 kilometres south of Sirte, on 28 February 2026.

The field was forced offline in 2015 following widespread civil unrest in Libya and a targeted attack at the field’s entrance in central Libya. The restart marks the culmination of a major rehabilitation effort that began in May 2024 with the construction of a brand-new 25,000 barrels-per-day production unit.

TotalEnergies confirmed the restart in a statement issued on 12 March, signalling renewed confidence among international operators in Libya’s petroleum sector despite the country’s fragile political environment.
