TotalEnergies Secures Major Deepwater Partnership in Liberia’s Harper Basin, Eyes Multi-Billion Dollar Prospects
French energy giant TotalEnergies has struck a landmark joint study agreement with BluEnergies to unlock the exploration potential of Liberia’s deepwater Harper Basin, marking one of the most significant investments in West African frontier exploration this year. The partnership, backed by a new reconnaissance license spanning approximately 8,900 square kilometers, positions TotalEnergies with a commanding 65% stake while BluEnergies holds 35%.
The 18-month technical work program will focus on advanced seismic reprocessing and seabed data acquisition across the strategically important LB-26, LB-30, and LB-31 blocks. The ambitious initiative aims to refine prospect definitions and de-risk potential drilling targets within the basin’s floor fan system, with both companies committed to applying for production sharing contracts once drillable prospects are identified.
BluEnergies has already identified multiple large Cretaceous-aged fan prospects in the Harper Basin through 3D seismic interpretation, building excitement around the area’s potential. The basin’s location along the West Africa Transform Margin—a geological trend that has yielded successful deepwater discoveries elsewhere in the region—adds significant confidence to the venture’s prospects.
This move underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to expanding its African portfolio in underexplored territories with high resource potential, positioning the company to capitalize on what could become one of West Africa’s next major hydrocarbon provinces.
