Libya and Nigeria Revive Ambitious Gas Pipeline Project to Europe
Tripoli, Libya – Libya’s Minister of Oil and Gas in the Government of National Unity, Khalifa Abdulsadiq, has met with Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) CEO Bayo Ogulari to discuss reviving the ambitious gas pipeline project linking Nigeria to Europe through Libya.
The high-level meeting, focused on enhancing global energy security through African cooperation, resulted in an agreement to facilitate information exchange between energy experts from both countries in preparation for detailed feasibility studies. The parties aim to sign a memorandum of understanding to establish a practical framework for the project.
The proposed pipeline represents a new strategic energy corridor connecting Africa with Europe, strengthening Libya’s position as a key energy hub while opening new horizons for Nigeria to expand its gas exports. The route through Libya would span approximately 3,300 kilometers, significantly shorter than alternative routes through Algeria (4,000 kilometers) or Morocco (5,560 kilometers).
Discussions on this transformative project began in June 2023, when the Government of National Unity authorized the Oil Ministry to conduct technical and economic studies on pipeline feasibility from Nigeria to Europe via either Niger or Chad to reach Libya. Previous studies have favored the Niger route and explored linking Nigeria’s ongoing Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline to the Greenstream pipeline, which runs from Libya’s Wafa field to Italy.
