Cyprus-Egypt Gas Partnership Advances with 2027 Connection Timeline
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi and Cyprus’s Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry George Papanastasiou have confirmed progress on connecting Cyprus’s Cronos natural gas field to Egypt’s energy infrastructure by 2027. The meeting in Nicosia, attended by senior representatives from Eni and TotalEnergies, focused on finalizing technical and implementation agreements for the strategic energy corridor.
Within the Steering Committee framework overseeing the Cronos field development, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to agreed project timelines. The committee reviewed the status of technical and implementation agreements now in final preparation stages, with a definitive investment decision expected this year.
The collaboration builds on agreements signed during the EGYPES 2025 meetings, establishing a framework for developing Cypriot natural gas discoveries using Egyptian infrastructure. The arrangement involves transporting gas from the Cronos field for processing at Egypt’s Zohr field facilities, followed by liquefaction at the Damietta LNG plant for export to European markets.
The ministers also reviewed developments concerning the Aphrodite natural gas field, including finalized implementation agreements and ongoing marine surveys for the planned gas pipeline route. These surveys are taking place in both Cypriot and Egyptian exclusive economic zones to prepare for linking the field to Egypt’s facilities.
Badawi emphasized Egypt’s readiness to complete the project and establish the new regional energy corridor, stressing the country’s commitment to removing any obstacles. The partnership aims to enhance regional cooperation while benefiting both countries’ energy sectors. Cronos is operated by Eni, while Chevron operates the Aphrodite field.
