Kenyan Energy Mogul Sets Sights on Mozambique Gas Sector Partnership
Kenyan oil industry leader Abdinasir Ali Hassan is exploring significant expansion opportunities in Mozambique’s natural gas and energy sectors through potential partnerships involving his HASS Petroleum Group, the Mozambican government, and Oman’s state-linked OQ Trading.
Following meetings with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo in Maputo, Hassan outlined his vision for strategic energy partnerships that could reshape regional energy dynamics. The HASS Petroleum president emphasized Mozambique’s strategic advantages, including its extensive coastline and position as a potential hub serving landlocked countries throughout Southern and Eastern Africa.
Hassan highlighted Mozambique’s port infrastructure, noting that facilities in Beira, Maputo, Nacala, and other locations provide access to markets in Malawi, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, and Zimbabwe. This geographic positioning makes Mozambique an attractive base for regional energy operations and distribution networks.
President Chapo responded positively to the proposals, with Hassan reporting that discussions received official blessing and that the government expressed readiness to advance cooperation to the next level. While no formal agreements were signed during the initial visit, both parties indicated optimism for future collaboration.
HASS Petroleum, established in 1997 in Kisumu by brothers Abdirizak Ali Hassan and Abdinasir Ali Hassan, has grown from a local Kenyan operation into a regional energy player operating across nine African countries. The company now runs over 150 retail service stations serving approximately 6,000 customers daily, with major storage facilities boasting combined throughput capacity of about 1 billion cubic meters per year.
The potential Mozambican expansion would mark a significant shift for HASS into broader energy partnerships and infrastructure development, backed by the international commercial expertise of OQ Trading.
