Morocco Launches $6 Billion Nigeria Gas Pipeline Construction This Month
Morocco is set to break ground this July on the monumental $6 billion first phase of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, a game-changing infrastructure project spanning over 5,000 kilometers across West Africa that promises to reshape the continent’s energy landscape.
Energy Minister Leila Benali confirmed the ambitious timeline for the transformative pipeline that will transport Nigerian natural gas through 11 African nations before reaching Morocco and eventually European markets. The broader multi-phase initiative carries a staggering total cost exceeding $20 billion and includes critical connections to Mauritania and Senegal in the initial rollout.
A separate investment announcement expected later this month will fund the crucial section linking Nador Port in northern Morocco to Dakhla in the south. Upon completion, the pipeline system is projected to deliver up to 30 billion cubic feet of gas daily, dramatically strengthening continental energy security and integration while helping Europe diversify its supply sources.
The project has attracted intense interest from global investment institutions and infrastructure funds, drawn by its strategic importance and projected returns exceeding 12%. Beyond economics, the pipeline promises substantial regional development, job creation, and improved energy access for millions across West Africa.
The initiative aligns perfectly with Morocco’s long-term vision to establish itself as a regional energy hub while supporting Nigeria’s strategy to monetize its vast natural gas reserves.
