Tunisia Faces Mounting Energy Challenges as Gas Production Drops 11%

Tunisia’s natural gas output declined 11% through May 2025 to 809 kilotonnes of oil equivalent, according to the National Observatory for Energy and Mines, highlighting growing energy security concerns for the North African nation.

Key gas fields experienced significant production drops, with Nawara field plummeting 34% while Hasdrubal and Miskar fields also registered sharp declines. However, a 17% increase in southern Tunisia’s production partially offset the overall decline.

The country responded by increasing gas imports from Algeria by 24%, boosting national supply by 7% to 1,811 ktep. This strategy underscores Tunisia’s growing dependence on Algerian gas amid regional market instability and domestic production constraints.

Transit royalties on Algerian gas, a crucial component of Tunisia’s energy portfolio, fell 18%, adding pressure on national resources. The report revealed governance issues with the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company exceeding its designated quota by 219 million cubic meters in 2024, requiring settlement procedures.

The findings highlight Tunisia’s fragile energy framework and emphasize urgent needs for increased exploration investment, energy efficiency improvements, and renewable energy development to ensure long-term energy resilience.
