Mauritania Revolutionizes Energy Sector with Complete Privatization Strategy

Mauritania is implementing a radical transformation of its power generation sector, shifting entirely to a privatized model that leverages both natural gas reserves and renewable energy potential. The government has announced it will no longer pursue state-led power projects, with all future electricity initiatives to be privately developed and operated.

Two independent power projects currently under development are expected to deliver a combined 550 MW to the national grid using domestic gas resources. The strategy is supported by comprehensive regulatory reforms, including a new public-private partnership framework and Africa’s first Green Hydrogen Code.

The country’s energy vision includes expanding the BirAllah deepwater gas field and developing the GTA project targeting 10 million tons of LNG annually. With current electricity access at just 57%, significant investments are planned in both grid expansion and off-grid systems to serve rural communities and industrial centers.

Mauritania is emerging as a frontrunner in green hydrogen development, with Minister Mohamed Ould Khaled stating the country has capacity to produce up to 12 million tons of green hydrogen annually. Major initiatives including Project Nour and Project Aman are positioned to serve both export markets and domestic industries.
