Namibian-Canadian Partnership Extends Orange Basin Exploration Through 2026
The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) and Canada’s Sintana Energy have secured a crucial 12-month extension for their petroleum exploration license in Namibia’s promising Orange Basin, extending operations through July 2026.
The extension for PEL 79, covering exploration blocks 2815 and 2915, positions the joint venture to capitalize on significant regional activity. NAMCOR operates the license with a 67% interest, while Sintana’s affiliate Giraffe Energy Investments holds the remaining 33%.
“Extending our exposure during a period of significant offset activity positions us to fully realize the significant geologic, commercial, and strategic value of PEL 79,” said Robert Bose, Chairman of Giraffe and CEO of Sintana Energy.
The license area benefits from proximity to acreage operated by major players including Shell, TotalEnergies, and Galp. The partnership has solid geological data including 2D and 3D seismic surveys, plus one well with gas shows intersecting the Kudu source rock.
Nearby developments are creating momentum in the region. Rhino Resources’ Capricornus-1X discovery at neighboring PEL 85 has flowed over 11,000 barrels of light oil per day, with additional drilling planned for the Volans prospect. BW Energy has also acquired 3D seismic data over PEL 3 and plans to drill the Kharas well in the second half of 2025.
