BP Makes Dramatic Return to Libya After Years of Absence, Reopens Tripoli Office

In a stunning development that signals renewed confidence in Libya’s oil sector, British petroleum giant BP has confirmed its immediate return to the North African nation, announcing plans to reopen its Tripoli office in the final quarter of 2025.

The landmark decision comes after Chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), Masoud Suleman, signed a crucial memorandum of understanding with BP in London, marking a significant milestone in Libya’s efforts to revitalize its energy sector.

Under the groundbreaking agreement, BP will conduct comprehensive studies to assess hydrocarbon exploration and production potential in the strategic Messla and Sarir fields, along with surrounding exploration territories. The partnership also includes provisions for training technical and leadership personnel in Libya’s oil industry.

“This system is a main link in the petroleum industry chain and represents our commitment to developing Libya’s oil sector,” Suleman declared during the ceremony, expressing the NOC’s aspirations for BP to play a transformative role in the country’s energy future.

In a separate but equally significant development, the NOC has reached an agreement with Shell to evaluate hydrocarbon prospects and conduct feasibility studies for the al-Atshan field and other NOC-owned territories.

These developments represent a major breakthrough for Libya’s oil industry, which has been working to attract international investment and expertise to boost production capacity and economic stability.
