Abu Dhabi-based Global South Utilities (GSU) has inaugurated a 50-MW solar farm with battery storage in the Central African Republic, lifting the country’s electricity generation capacity by more than 60%.
The Sakai facility, built in just ten months, comprises more than 80,000 solar panels, 156 inverters and a 15-MWh battery energy storage system. GSU says the plant will supply electricity to more than 300,000 households and cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50,000 tonnes a year.
Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadera inaugurated the facility alongside government officials and GSU representatives. The company said concessional financing from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development was key to delivering the project, though it did not disclose the total investment. Sakai follows GSU’s earlier delivery of a 50-MW solar farm in Chad and extends the company’s portfolio across Africa, Central Asia and South America.
