TotalEnergies Set to Lift Force Majeure on $20 Billion Mozambique LNG Project After Four-Year Shutdown

TotalEnergies is taking final steps toward lifting the force majeure clause on its massive $20 billion Mozambique LNG project, which has been suspended since March 2021 due to security concerns in Palma district, Cabo Delgado province. General Manager Maxime Rabilloud confirmed during a community infrastructure handover that the company is “preparing to lift the force majeure” and working intensively to restart operations at the Afungi peninsula site.

The project’s engineering works are 90% complete, with turbines already under construction outside the country. Critical components for the natural gas liquefaction unit are ready to be shipped once the force majeure is officially lifted. The facility includes a maritime logistics base capable of receiving ships carrying large industrial equipment.

Security measures are now in place through national forces and a reinforced Rwandan contingent, following recent high-level diplomatic meetings. Machinery and equipment are already operating within the Afungi project perimeter, signaling imminent resumption of the largest onshore natural gas liquefaction project in Africa.

The restart represents a crucial economic turning point for Mozambique, expected to generate thousands of jobs and position the country as a major global LNG player.
