Stamper Moves to Keep Its Namibian Licences Alive as Chevron, TotalEnergies and Shell Crowd Into Neighbouring Acreage

Canadian explorer Stamper Oil & Gas is working to extend and renew its offshore Namibian licences while bigger names step up drilling next door.

The company holds interests of 5% in PEL 106, 5% in PEL 98 and 20% in PEL 102. Its operating partners have applied for extensions, or for transitions into first renewal periods, to allow more technical evaluation. The PEL 106 application asks for an additional 12 months to assess the licence and possibly acquire more 3D seismic data. All applications remain subject to regulatory approval.

Activity around the acreage is picking up. Chevron expects to drill the Nabba-1X exploration well on PEL 90 before the end of 2026, next to Stamper’s PEL 107, where Stamper holds a 32.9% indirect working interest. Shell has reported results from its Merlin-1X well on PEL 39, and TotalEnergies has outlined a three-well appraisal campaign at the Mopane discovery on PEL 83.

Stamper cautions that results from neighbouring licences do not establish hydrocarbon discoveries or commercial viability on its own acreage, though they could inform regional geological understanding. The company says it remains focused on technical evaluation and on farm-out transactions to bring in additional expertise and capital.
