South Africa Risks Losing World Cup Qualifier Win Over Suspended Player
FIFA opens proceedings against SAFA for using Teboho Mokoena in March clash vs Lesotho; potential 3-point deduction could reshape Group C World Cup standings.
South Africa is now under threat of losing a key World Cup qualifying match and points after playing midfielder Teboho Mokoena in its 2-0 win over Lesotho in March, despite his suspension under FIFA rules.
The governing body has initiated disciplinary action against the South African Football Association (SAFA) for what is being deemed a breach of eligibility regulations.
Teboho Mokoena was reportedly ineligible due to accumulated yellow cards but still appeared in the match. The development could see South Africa stripped of its win and handed a points deduction.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) said it was awaiting official communication from FIFA and insisted it had “no intention of breaking the rules.”
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has officially opened proceedings, giving SAFA a deadline to respond to the charges.
If found guilty, South Africa could be forfeited the match, resulting in a 3-0 loss, and lose the three points earned from the win.
And if sanctioned, South Africa’s chances of reaching the next round of qualifiers could be significantly weakened, dealing a blow to the team’s World Cup hopes.
