Researchers have found a novel way to map one of the most difficult regions of Earth’s atmosphere to study, by harnessing the collective data from roughly 1,200 Starlink satellites. The team used the satellites’ orbital behaviour to reconstruct changes in atmospheric density around 500 kilometres above the planet’s surface, an altitude that has long resisted detailed observation.
The upper atmosphere plays an outsized role in shaping climate and weather patterns, yet its remoteness and complex dynamics have made it notoriously hard to monitor directly. By repurposing data from a satellite constellation built for an entirely different purpose, the researchers have opened a new window into this region’s behaviour, offering data that could sharpen models used to predict satellite trajectories.
With orbital space growing more crowded by the year, better data on atmospheric density stands to meaningfully improve satellite tracking and reduce the risk of collisions. Researchers say the approach is a striking example of how existing infrastructure, built for one purpose, can be turned toward solving pressing scientific and safety challenges in an increasingly congested orbital environment.
