MSC Launches New Shipping Route to Speed Up Mozambique’s Massive LNG Build

Mediterranean Shipping Company has launched the Afungi Shuttle, a new maritime service connecting the ports of Nacala and Maputo directly to Afungi in Cabo Delgado province, the site of the TotalEnergies-led Mozambique LNG project, to speed up delivery of construction materials as work accelerates.

The service runs dedicated feeder rotations between Nacala and Afungi and between Maputo and Afungi, integrating the feeder leg into a single MSC booking so companies supplying the project have one point of contact for shipments moving through the wider network. MSC said customers can access Afungi through connections to major global trade routes serving Europe, the Americas, Asia and Southern Africa.

The launch comes as Mozambique LNG construction gathers pace following the resumption of activity at the Afungi site after a lengthy suspension linked to insecurity in Cabo Delgado. MSC said the new link strengthens the supply-chain infrastructure supporting one of Africa’s most significant energy projects, reinforcing Nacala and Maputo’s roles as gateways for the country’s expanding energy and industrial sectors.
