Mozambique’s Coral Sul Platform Set to Generate $16 Billion Revenue Over 30 Years

Mozambique’s offshore energy sector received a massive boost with revelations that the Coral Sul floating LNG platform will contribute approximately $16 billion to the state over its 30-year operational lifespan through taxes and fees.

The stunning financial projection was unveiled during a media visit to the platform, operated by Italian energy company ENI through its local subsidiary ENI Rovuma Basin. Located 50 kilometers off the Palma district coast in northern Cabo Delgado province, the facility has already demonstrated impressive performance metrics.

Since its inauguration in November 2022, Coral Sul has processed 501.6 million cubic feet of natural gas and exported 128 shipments—112 of LNG and 16 of condensate. The platform has already contributed $210 million in taxes to the Mozambican government as of June 2025.

The facility, constructed by Samsung in South Korea and transported to the ultra-deep waters of the Rovuma Basin, boasts an annual production capacity of 3.4 million tonnes of LNG. British oil giant BP holds an exclusive 20-year purchase contract for all LNG produced, with an option for a 10-year extension.

Coral Sul’s offshore location has proven strategically advantageous, protecting it from Islamist insurgent attacks that have severely disrupted onshore LNG developments in the Afungi Peninsula. The platform currently stands as the only active LNG production project among several initiatives in Cabo Delgado.
