Libya’s Oil Sector Embraces Digital Revolution Through AI and Smart Technologies
Libya’s oil industry is undergoing a comprehensive digital transformation as the National Oil Corporation forges strategic partnerships with major international companies while integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence and data analytics into core operations. The NOC has recently signed memorandums of understanding with global energy giants including ExxonMobil, bp, and Shell to conduct geological and geophysical studies across the Sirte Basin and key oilfields such as Sarir, Messla, and al-Atshan. These agreements signal growing foreign investment confidence and reinforce Libya’s commitment to modernizing its upstream operations. At the technological forefront, global technology company SLB has deployed AI-powered video analytics alongside electric submersible pump performance tools, achieving remarkable results by reducing well-site visits by over 90% while enhancing production monitoring capabilities. The NOC is also exploring AI-driven seismic processing in partnership with the Arabian Gulf Oil Company, targeting faster timelines, improved resource discovery, and significant cost reductions.
The ambitious “Smart Oil Cities” initiative represents another leap forward, with the NOC partnering with telecom providers Al-Madar, Libyana, and Hatif Libya through a memorandum signed in September 2024. This initiative aims to modernize digital infrastructure in oil hubs by integrating advanced telecommunications and IT systems to improve operational efficiency and sustainability. Libya’s oil sector is increasingly utilizing real-time data analytics to optimize production and minimize environmental impact. Companies like AOSCO Oilfield Services and Sirte Oil Company are deploying digital gas lift monitoring systems to track pressure, flow rates, and production. Combined with satellite telemetry from partners including Rawafed Libya and Inmarsat, this approach enables proactive decision-making, reduces downtime, enhances safety, and establishes foundations for sustainable oilfield management.
