Libya and Nigeria Forge Strategic Alliance for Gas Pipeline to Europe

Libya and Nigeria have announced a groundbreaking partnership to develop a major gas pipeline project that could revolutionize energy exports to European markets, following high-level discussions between the two nations’ oil ministers.

Libya’s Tripoli-based Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdel Sadeg, met with Nigerian counterpart Senator Heineken Lokpobiri to discuss the ambitious pipeline project linking the two African nations. The meeting focused on prospects for bilateral cooperation in natural gas projects and the joint role both countries could play in supporting global energy security.

The two sides agreed to coordinate an upcoming visit by a high-level delegation from the Nigerian Ministry of Oil to Libya to advance the project. This builds on a September 2024 agreement between the nations to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding for conducting technical and economic feasibility studies on the pipeline project.

The pipeline would transport gas produced from Nigerian fields to export markets in Europe via Libya, potentially providing a significant alternative energy route for European consumers. The Libyan Ministry of Oil and Gas indicated that this project is expected to deliver tremendous economic returns for the Libyan state.

The strategic partnership represents a major step toward enhancing energy cooperation between two of Africa’s largest oil and gas producers, with potential implications for regional energy security and European gas supply chains.
