Ghana Commissions New LPG Carrier in South Korea, Aiming to Cut Regional Energy Dependence

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new liquefied petroleum gas carrier, the MT Asharami Ghana, during a working visit to the Republic of Korea, in a move described as a strategic step toward strengthening energy security across Ghana and the broader West African region.

The dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier was commissioned as part of the West Africa Gas Limited (WAGL) Energy initiative alongside government officials, sector stakeholders, and international partners. President Mahama said the vessel represents a significant addition to a growing fleet designed to support the region’s evolving energy needs and expand LPG transport capacity.

Ghana currently produces approximately 50% of its LPG requirements domestically and relies on imports to meet the other half of local consumption. President Mahama underscored the role of LPG in the continent’s energy transition, noting that its wider adoption reduces dependence on charcoal, firewood, and kerosene, with direct benefits for public health, indoor air quality, and forest conservation.

The president commended the Sahara Group, WAGL Energy, and their partners for bringing the project to fruition, describing the commissioning as a reflection of what can be achieved when innovation, investment, and regional collaboration converge to bridge infrastructure gaps.
