Gambia Launches Innovative Pay-As-You-Go Solar Initiative to Expand Rural Energy Access

The Gambia has unveiled an ambitious pay-as-you-go solar energy project designed to dramatically expand electricity access across the country, particularly targeting underserved rural communities. The groundbreaking initiative is spearheaded by the Mbolo Association, a local Gambian organization, with strategic support from the United Nations Development Program under its Climate Promise initiative.

The comprehensive program offers three distinct solar system models tailored to varying energy needs: small utility systems at 1.2kWp, medium utility at 2.4kWp, and large utility installations at 5kWp. Each system incorporates flexible payment options designed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while providing stable and sustainable energy subscriptions to communities nationwide.

The initiative represents a significant step toward achieving the African Development Bank’s projection that at least 70% of Gambians, including 50% in rural areas, would have electricity access by the end of 2024. The utility model has secured protected design status and is anticipated to create substantial employment opportunities for young people.

“Pay-as-you-go solar systems are a practical step toward bridging energy gaps and supporting community development,” stated Malang Sambou, Executive Director of Mbolo Association.

The program was developed through extensive research on clean energy solutions and aims to provide reliable power infrastructure while supporting the country’s transition to renewable energy sources.
