Egypt Races Against Time as Gas Network Braces for Peak Demand Crisis
In a surprise midnight inspection, Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi rushed to the National Gas Network Control Centre as the country prepares for another potentially devastating summer of power shortages. The minister’s unannounced visit to GASCO headquarters signals mounting concerns over Egypt’s ability to handle surging electricity demand during peak consumption months.
The North African nation, which faced crippling power cuts just last year, is now scrambling to ensure network stability after years of declining gas production. Egypt has been forced to implement load-shedding measures since July 2023 and unveiled a massive $1.18 billion emergency gas import plan to prevent widespread blackouts.
With natural gas supplies dropping due to regional unrest and a severe hard currency shortage limiting payments to international oil companies, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has urged citizens to exercise “extreme caution” in electricity use as pressure mounts on the country’s overstretched energy system.
