Cutting Sweet Foods From Your Diet Might Not Curb Cravings After All, Study Finds

A six-month clinical trial has found that adjusting how much sweet-tasting food people eat may do little to change their cravings or improve key health markers. Researchers assigned participants to high-, low-, or average-sweetness diets to test whether the changes would shift preferences for sweet foods, affect body weight, or move markers linked to diabetes and heart disease.

Across the board, the trial found no meaningful differences between the groups, suggesting that simply dialling sweetness up or down in someone’s diet isn’t enough on its own to change their relationship with sugar or deliver measurable health benefits. The findings point to a more complicated picture than the common assumption that cutting sweet foods automatically curbs cravings.

Researchers also noted that many participants drifted back toward their original eating habits once the trial ended, underscoring how difficult sustained dietary change can be. The results suggest that more nuanced, individualised strategies, rather than blanket sweetness reduction, may be needed to meaningfully shift eating habits and health outcomes over the long term.
