CHARIOT RECLAIMS MOROCCAN GAS ASSETS AS ENERGEAN EXITS STRATEGIC OFFSHORE LICENSES

In a dramatic turnaround for Morocco’s offshore energy sector, Africa-focused Chariot has regained operatorship of two key Moroccan offshore licenses following Energean’s unexpected withdrawal. The London-based oil and gas player has transferred its interests in both the Lixus and Rissana offshore licenses back to Chariot, who now commands a commanding 75% working interest in each license.

The move comes less than a year after Energean took the helm at these strategic assets, where it had acquired a 45% interest in Lixus and a 37.5% stake in Rissana. The Lixus license houses the promising Anchois gas field, where three wells have been drilled, including the most recent Anchois-3 completed in September 2024.

Despite not delivering the expanded volumes initially hoped for, Chariot remains bullish on the project’s potential. “We are pleased to have completed the transfer of these licenses and regained operatorship as we see material value within our diversified Moroccan position, both offshore and onshore,” said Adonis Pouroulis, CEO of Chariot.

The company plans to reassess the Anchois development plan, emphasizing Morocco’s robust gas market fundamentals and excellent fiscal terms as drivers for advancing these domestic energy projects.
