Cameroon Launches Second Oil Refinery to Boost Energy Independence
Cameroon has officially begun construction of a new oil refinery and petroleum storage depot in its southern region, marking a crucial step toward enhanced energy independence. The state-owned National Hydrocarbons Corporation (SNH) announced the project launch within the Kribi industrial port zone, strategically selected for its infrastructure advantages and maritime transport proximity.
SNH representative Nathalie Moudiki highlighted the facility’s importance during the inauguration ceremony, noting it will feature large-capacity fuel storage systems designed to support national demand. The refinery will process domestically produced crude oil and significantly reduce Cameroon’s dependence on imported fuel, an issue that has strained the country’s energy supply since 2019.
Construction is expected to take over a year, with the facility becoming Cameroon’s second refinery upon completion. The country’s only existing refinery in Limbe has been out of service since suffering severe fire damage, forcing the nation to rely almost entirely on fuel imports.
The new refinery project represents a critical investment in national energy infrastructure, aimed at stabilizing fuel supply, improving energy security, and boosting the local economy. The facility’s location in the Kribi industrial port zone positions it to efficiently handle both domestic crude processing and potential export operations.
