Angola’s Surging Gas Production Fails to Translate into Increased LNG Processing

Angolan natural gas output has climbed for three consecutive months since September 2025, yet the volume delivered to the country’s Liquefied Natural Gas plant has failed to match the pace of production increases, raising questions about infrastructure utilization and gas monetization strategies.

Overall production surged by 846 million standard cubic feet per day between September, when output stood at 2.39 billion standard cubic feet per day, and November 2025, when it reached 3.24 billion standard cubic feet per day. Despite this substantial increase, the Angola Liquefied Natural Gas plant, which provides over 95% of the route to market for Angolan gas, received only an additional 28 million standard cubic feet per day during the same period.

The primary culprit is the high percentage of re-injected gas used to maintain reservoir pressure. In September 2025, only 40% of total output, amounting to 964 million standard cubic feet per day, was made available to the ALNG plant. A substantial 55% of production, or 1.323 billion standard cubic feet per day, was re-injected for reservoir pressure maintenance, while 13%, approximately 323 million standard cubic feet per day, was consumed for power generation at oil facilities.

The disconnect between production and processing became even more pronounced between September and October, when despite a production increase of 604 million standard cubic feet per day, the contribution to the ALNG plant actually dropped by 68 million standard cubic feet per day. Gas delivery to grid-connected power plants remains minimal, and with no gas-based industries operating in the country, domestic gas consumption is limited to just 150 million standard cubic feet per day.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in Angola’s gas value chain and raises questions about the country’s ability to capitalize on its growing gas resources through effective monetization strategies.
