Algeria and Mauritania Explore Joint Venture for Regional Petroleum Distribution
Sonatrach is advancing discussions to establish a joint venture with Mauritania’s national oil company for petroleum product distribution and marketing across Mauritania. The initiative represents a significant expansion of bilateral energy cooperation between the North and West African nations.
Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi announced the potential partnership during meetings in Nouakchott with Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company Director General Ismail Abdel Vetah. The discussions encompassed broader cooperation opportunities across the entire hydrocarbons value chain, from exploration to retail distribution.
The proposed joint venture builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in January, with both companies committed to a “win-win” approach to regional energy development. Several Mauritanian engineers have already begun training at the Algerian Petroleum Institute, with plans to expand the technical exchange program.
A non-disclosure agreement was signed during the visit, governing the exchange of technical data and exploration information. The agreement is described as a crucial step toward establishing an effective partnership based on mutual trust and shared interests in regional energy development.
