Egypt’s Petroleum Sector Goes Solar: PM Switches On Suez Plant as 51 More Projects Line Up

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has inaugurated a 1.2-megawatt solar plant at Nasr Petroleum Company in Suez, as Egypt’s petroleum sector widens its use of renewable energy and efficiency measures, according to a Cabinet statement.

The plant is made up of 10 solar canopies built over the company’s parking area, using available space to generate clean power for part of the facility’s needs. Salah Mohamed, the company’s general manager of energy efficiency, said it should cut grid electricity use by 2,628 megawatt-hours a year. Chairman Rashad Nazim said the project supports efforts to improve efficiency, reduce reliance on conventional energy and lower long-term operating costs.

Nazim said the sector is carrying out an integrated plan that includes more solar generation, using flare gas to produce electricity instead of burning it, and efficiency initiatives across operating sites. From July 2024 to September 2026, it completed 36 solar projects with a combined 5 megawatts of capacity, expected to save about 680,000 litres of diesel and 14 million cubic feet of natural gas a year. A further 51 solar projects are targeted.

In the same period the sector delivered 125 energy-conservation and efficiency projects that cut carbon emissions by roughly 768,000 tonnes, with 77 more in preparation.

Nasr Petroleum Company is a state-owned refiner based in Suez that processes crude oil into petroleum products for Egypt’s domestic fuel supply.
