ADNOC, G42 and OpenAI Sign Deal to Put Frontier AI Across Abu Dhabi’s Oil and Gas Operations
Abu Dhabi’s state energy firm ADNOC and AI company G42 have signed a deal with OpenAI to deploy advanced AI across ADNOC’s operations, Reuters reported. It was signed on Monday at the ADIPEC energy conference in Abu Dhabi as OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman visited the UAE. ADNOC chief executive Sultan Al Jaber said it makes ADNOC the first energy-sector company to deploy OpenAI’s frontier technology.
Altman said the company’s most advanced models would be used to “take the hardest, most valuable problems” that ADNOC faces, and that energy supply will be a dominant factor in AI’s cost and abundance because the physical world must power it. The Abu Dhabi Media Office said OpenAI also signed agreements with sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, for AI in investment analysis and risk assessment, and with G42 unit Inception42.
OpenAI is a partner in the first phase of a 5-gigawatt AI data-centre project that the UAE is building with American technology companies. Reuters also reported, citing sources, that OpenAI is seeking investor commitments, including from Abu Dhabi’s MGX, in a fundraising that could value it above $1.4 trillion.
