Gabon Strikes Black Gold Again: Assala Achieves First Oil at Grand N’Gongui Field
Assala Gabon has achieved first oil at the Grand N’Gongui (GNG) field, delivering a major milestone for Gabon’s onshore energy sector after a multi-year appraisal campaign completed in 2025.
The field, which targets reservoirs within the Gamba Formation, holds an estimated 350 million barrels of stock tank oil initially in place (STOIIP). With a phased development now underway and a 60-well drilling programme approved, peak production is expected to surpass 10,000 barrels of oil per day.
Assala accomplished the project launch in roughly 12 months from engineering to start-up, requiring parallel execution of design, procurement, and construction activities under demanding timelines. The development also demanded complex logistics and custom pipeline solutions adapted to the lagoon terrain of the project area.
The achievement reinforces Assala’s standing as a key onshore operator in Gabon and bolsters the country’s efforts to maintain and grow its oil production base. The company said it will continue working with national authorities and partners as it executes the phased development rollout.
