Egypt and Qatar Sign Strategic LNG Supply Agreement
Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on January 4 with Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy, to secure a steady supply of liquefied natural gas to Egypt. In a decisive step toward consolidating Egypt’s energy security, the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company and QatarEnergy finalized an executive mechanism for the delivery of natural gas cargoes to be delivered in Ain Sokhna and Damietta ports throughout the summer of 2026. This MoU reinforces the strategic partnership between Egypt and Qatar in energy.
Currently operating across six offshore blocks in the Mediterranean, QatarEnergy aims to increase investment over the next five years and launch a new drilling campaign alongside leading global energy partners. The agreement builds upon a strategic foundation laid during a May 2025 meeting in Doha, where Badawi and Al-Kaabi first discussed long-term contracts and infrastructure integration. Qatar, which holds the world’s third-largest natural gas reserves, has become a critical partner in Egypt’s strategy to diversify sources of energy imports.
