Military says precision strikes targeted insurgent movements near Banki and Bula as counter-insurgency operations intensify.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced that more than 25 terrorists were killed in coordinated night airstrikes in Borno and Yobe states, as security forces intensified counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

The strikes, conducted on September 18 under Operation Hadin Kai, targeted militant hideouts and movement corridors near the Banki area of Borno and Bula in Yobe State.

According to the Air Force, surveillance platforms first detected groups of insurgents moving in the region before strike aircraft carried out successive precision raids.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF, said the mission successfully disrupted terrorist activities and denied them freedom of movement.

He added that follow-up reconnaissance confirmed the neutralisation of the fighters and stability in the targeted areas.

“This operation demonstrates our resolve to employ air power decisively in support of ground forces, ensuring terrorists are prevented from regrouping or threatening communities,” Ejodame said in a statement.

The raids come amid ongoing threats from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), groups that have destabilised Nigeria’s northeast for more than a decade through bombings, ambushes, and mass abductions.

Analysts say such targeted strikes highlight improved coordination between intelligence gathering and combat operations but warn that militants could adapt by changing tactics or blending with civilian populations.

Security experts also stress that sustained ground operations, community cooperation, and support for displaced residents are vital to consolidating the gains of the air campaign.

The military has pledged to maintain pressure on insurgents, combining intelligence-led surveillance with precision airstrikes and ground offensives to restore peace in the troubled region.
