Nigerian LNG Intensifies Methane Reduction Campaign with Advanced Technology Implementation
The Nigerian LNG company is strengthening its methane emissions reduction efforts through facility design improvements, asset upgrades, and new technology deployment, according to Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Philip Mshelbila. Central to the company’s strategy is the installation of a new boil-off gas compressor system nearing completion, which will capture and re-inject methane back into the production value chain.
Mshelbila emphasized that NLNG’s renewed focus builds on its 26-year legacy of reducing Nigeria’s gas flaring, having cut the country’s flaring volumes by more than 40% through associated gas capture and monetization. The company has achieved Gold Standard recognition for two consecutive years under the OGMP 2.0 framework, demonstrating excellence in methane emissions quantification accuracy.
NLNG has developed a comprehensive framework for understanding and managing methane emissions, with detailed baseline measurements and intervention monitoring. However, Mshelbila stressed that addressing the global methane challenge requires industry-wide cooperation, noting that oil and gas operations account for approximately 21% of total global methane emissions, with agriculture contributing the largest share at 40%.
The company advocates for stronger partnerships across the energy value chain, including improved financing models for smaller operators and knowledge sharing on emerging technologies such as satellite-based detection systems.
