WHO deploys Ervebo vaccine to frontline workers and contacts in Bulape, while 45,000 additional doses are approved to halt spread.

The World Health Organization has begun an Ebola vaccination campaign in Bulape health zone following the declaration of an outbreak earlier this month in Kasai Province.

An initial 400 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, drawn from a national stockpile of 2,000 doses in Kinshasa, have been delivered to the epicentre.

A “ring-vaccination” strategy is being used to protect frontline health workers and those who have come into contact with confirmed Ebola cases.

The International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision has approved around 45,000 additional doses to strengthen response efforts in the affected areas.

Recent data show there are 20 confirmed cases, 32 suspected cases, and 16 deaths.   One case confirmed about 70 kilometres from Bulape has raised concerns of spread beyond the immediate area.

WHO warns that although containing this outbreak remains possible, timely logistical support, adequate funding, and overcoming access challenges are essential.
