Greek Energy Giant Energean Eyes Carbon Capture Expansion in Egypt
Egypt’s petroleum ministry hosted discussions with Greek energy company Energean to explore enhanced cooperation in oil and gas development, with particular focus on expanding Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. Minister Karim Badawi met with Energean CEO Mathios Rigas at the ministry’s New Alamein City headquarters to discuss leveraging the Greek company’s environmental expertise.
The talks centered on advancing CCS applications while capitalizing on the alignment between Egypt and Greece in adopting environmental sustainability solutions and reducing carbon emissions. Minister Badawi highlighted Egypt’s success in overcoming energy sector challenges despite geopolitical pressures, noting the country’s rapid expansion of exploration and production activities supported by investment incentives.
Energean’s CEO expressed appreciation for Egypt’s stable political and economic climate, describing it as strategically attractive for energy sector investment. The company indicated interest in expanding its partnership areas with Egypt, particularly in CCS projects and fertilizer production, building on its existing Mediterranean natural gas operations through the Abu Qir concession and other development projects.
