Egypt Launches Massive Oil and Gas Expansion with 17 New Wells as Mediterranean Blocks Go to Market
Egypt has completed its evaluation of bids for seven new oil and gas exploration areas, marking a significant acceleration in the country’s energy expansion strategy. The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is preparing to drill at least 17 exploratory wells across newly awarded blocks, representing one of the largest exploration campaigns in recent years.
Major players have secured substantial positions in the new round. Cheiron has won exploration rights in the North Sitra and East Sidi Barrani areas with plans for four exploratory wells, while Apache has secured the West Knais K block in the Western Desert. Pharos Energy will explore the South Abu Senan area with three planned wells, and IPR Energy Group has been assigned the South Wadi El Rayan block for three additional wells.
In a parallel development, the ministry has announced four new offshore blocks in the Mediterranean Sea, offered by the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). The deadline for these bids closed on July 2nd, 2025, with results expected shortly.
This aggressive expansion strategy positions Egypt to become a crucial supplier in the global oil and gas landscape, potentially opening new cooperation opportunities across the Middle East region. The move represents Egypt’s commitment to swiftly advancing its energy strategies and maximizing production from both mature and frontier exploration areas.
