Northern Drilling Rig Secures New Namibian Assignment Following TotalEnergies Operations
The Deepsea Mira, a 2018-built semisubmersible rig owned by John Fredriksen-controlled Northern Ocean, has secured a new drilling contract with Rhino Resources for operations offshore Namibia. The Odfjell Drilling-managed rig will drill the Volans-1X exploration well, with operations expected to commence between late July and early August 2025.
The assignment follows the rig’s recent completion of operations for TotalEnergies in Namibia, including the Marula-1X well that proved unsuccessful. The Deepsea Mira is currently positioned at Walvis Bay port, strategically located for the upcoming drilling campaign.
The Volans prospect is situated near the Capricornus and Sagittarius discoveries, which Rhino previously drilled using the Noble Discoverer drillship. Rhino Resources operates PEL85 with a 42.5% interest, partnering with Azule Energy, Namibia’s state-owned NAMCOR, and Korres Investments.
The 55-day drilling program reflects continued confidence in Namibian offshore prospects, despite recent exploration setbacks in the region.
