UAE JOINS $25BN NIGERIA-MOROCCO GAS PIPELINE FUNDING RACE, CHALLENGING CHINA AND U.S.

In a major diplomatic and energy breakthrough, the United Arab Emirates has announced its intention to contribute funding to the massive $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, joining China and the United States as key international backers.

The ambitious pipeline, designed to ship Nigerian gas to European markets through Morocco, has now secured support from multiple heavyweight financial institutions including the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and the OPEC Fund, according to Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali.

In a statement to Morocco’s parliament last week, Benali confirmed that China’s Jingye Steel Group has already been awarded a contract to supply pipes to the project, while revealing that “Morocco has completed all preliminary feasibility and engineering studies for the planned gas pipeline.”

The mammoth 5,660-kilometer pipeline will connect Nigeria to Morocco, starting from Southern Dakhla city in the Sahara region before linking to North Morocco, where gas will be shipped to European markets. The project represents a significant shift in Africa’s energy infrastructure landscape and will traverse a total of 15 African countries.

A joint Morocco-Nigeria venture is actively advancing the project, which promises to reshape energy dynamics across multiple regions.
