Tanzania Set to Become Regional LPG Hub with Massive New Terminal Project
Tanzania is positioning itself as East Africa’s liquefied petroleum gas hub with the launch of construction for the Tanga LPG terminal, which will become the country’s largest LPG facility upon completion in 2027.
Integrated LPG company Petredec has partnered with Tanzanian LPG conglomerate ASAS Group of Companies to develop the ambitious project in Tanga Bay. The facility will feature six mounded LPG storage spheres with 40,000 cubic meters capacity, eight truck loading gantries, and a 2.8-kilometer underwater pipeline.
“In line with our aims to increase access to clean cooking for all Tanzanians, we are pleased to welcome Petredec as an investor in the LPG sector,” stated Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, highlighting the project’s alignment with national clean energy goals.
The terminal will accommodate Very Large Gas Carriers, which cannot currently dock at Tanzania’s existing port facilities. Once operational, it aims to provide alternative cooking fuel solutions, reducing reliance on biomass while monetizing domestic gas resources.
“The Tanga LPG terminal will be instrumental in helping establish Tanzania as a prominent clean energy hub in the wider East African region,” noted Jonathan Fancher, CEO of Petredec Global.
