Tanzania Launches First Gas Drilling in Decade, Production Set to Surge

Tanzania is preparing to drill three new natural gas wells in November 2025 at the Mnazi Bay Block in Mtwara Region, marking the first drilling activity in the area since 2015. The ambitious project is expected to boost output by over 30 million cubic feet per day, significantly enhancing the country’s energy capacity.

The drilling initiative follows a strategic policy shift in 2024 when the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation increased its equity stake in the Mnazi Bay Block from 20 percent to 40 percent, strengthening government control over the strategic asset. Charles Nyangi, acting director general of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority, called the development “historic.”

The expanded gas production will help meet growing demand across electricity generation, industrial processing, and automotive sectors while reducing reliance on imported fuels. The project emphasizes local content participation, ensuring Tanzanian citizens and service providers benefit through job creation and skills development.
