Somalia Gears Up for Oil Exploration as University Partnership Targets Workforce Development

Somalia is preparing to launch oil exploration activities next month with the arrival of the Çağrı Bey exploration vessel, as the country ramps up efforts to develop its natural resources sector through a strategic partnership between academia and government.

The University of Somalia and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources signed a cooperation agreement on Wednesday focusing on research, training, and development of Somali manpower in the extraction industry. The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Mahamed Mahamud Mahamed, the Rector of the University of Somalia, and Mr. Mahamed Hashi Carabey, the Director General of the Ministry of Petroleum.

The deal aims at advancing the country’s natural resources, particularly oil and minerals, with the University of Somalia contributing to research, training, and the development of Somali personnel to play an active role in the upcoming oil exploration activities. The university is expected to provide professional training and capacity-building programs for graduates to help them participate in the country’s resource development.

The University of Somalia is one of several institutions offering specialized programs in natural resources and minerals, and it is expected to play a significant role in the future of Somalia’s natural resource extraction, particularly oil and gas. The agreement will help ensure the preparation of a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the development of Somalia’s natural resources, which is vital for the government’s plans to continue oil exploration and production within the country.

Oil exploration activities are expected to begin in February this year when the Çağrı Bey exploration vessel docks on Somalia’s coastline.
